Honda Fit S mark-up $1000 over MSRP. Breakdown, anyone?
Hi. A firend of mine recently bought a 07 Honda Fit S in So. Cal area. The dealer did not want to get rid of added markup of $1000 even though we tried for like 4 hours. It stated as $1695 markup on window sticker. They determined that they can sell Fit with $1000 markup to other customers no problem. (Fit is recentely a popular car in So. Cal area, and we can't find any dealer who won't charge markups.)
Can anybody know actual breakdown of costs for low-cost, super-popular cars like this? Does anybody know specific info for Honda Fit? (I would assume profit margin is very slim, since Honda is importing these cars from Japan, and base price is low.)
How much are we really getting bitten?
The dealer also had CIVIC Si both in Coupe and Sedan with $5000 markup on window sticker. Does this sound right to you?
Does anybody know why this dealer is so bold charging us with extra?
Here are some reports on what other people paid for their Fits. They come from various places in the US, but will give you a basis for comparison.
But the Fits are in short supply. From the following it sounds like your experience was typical.

1) Northern CA pricing on Fits
We just bought a Honda Fit Sport AT Black today. Thanks to this forum, we already had leads on where to go to get MSRP pricing.
We bought ours from Hopkins Honda in Fairfield, CA. Got the last one for now. They were just great. We dealt with Mitch from internet sales who is very thorough, straightforward, easy going. No hard sell. Got MSRP, no package add-ons, no pressure from finance to get extended warranty, clear coat or anything else. We were REALLY pleased with Mitch and Hopkins.
Car: $16,565
Doc fee: $55
Tax $1288.05
DMV Elec filing fee: $28
Lic fees: $179.75
Total: $18,115.80
We also spoke to Dave Gibbons at University Honda (Davis, CA) who would have given us $100 off MSRP, he just didn't have the car we wanted on the lot. He is also very easy going, straightforward, and no hard sell and he calls back when he says he will. This is unlike San Leandro Honda that will do MSRP and no package add-ons, but I could not get Griselda to call me back even though I said I had a check ready etc.
Vacaville will do $200 under MSRP for Costco members but they do non-negotiable add-ons so the price ends up being about $130 over MSRP. Marin Honda would not budge on $1000 over MSRP with about $300 worth of add-ons.

2) I got lucky finding a Fit!!
After 3-4 weeks of desperately searching for a fit in the Triangle area of North Carolina, about two weeks ago I called Leith Honda of Raleigh out of the blue and was able to find a Blue Sport MT with nothing at all added to it. So "just off the truck" that it wasn't even NC inspected yet.
Because of the research I'd done on the internet about having to pay above MSRP for a fit, having to pay for extras forced onto the car by the dealer, or simply the difficulties in finding one, I simply accepted I'd be paying MSRP and went in determined to avoid any "unneeded extras".
The salesman, Daryl, was very professional and there seemed to be an understanding of the situation surrounding the Fit in regards to prices. I really didn't make any effort to negotiate at all, something to which I was fairly embarassed at after the purchase. But because Daryl treated this like buying an Apple Computer in an Apple store -- the price is listed and the sales people just help you purchase it not negotiate an extra-high price -- the process was very straightforward. He took lots of information and explained all the fees and while I can't tell if it was real or sincere or not, he made an effort to ask his sales person to waive the doc fees ($398) if I was to referr all interested parties to them. This was denied (of course), and no big deal to me as I'd already expected to pay these BS fees in NC where they are permitted by law.
So all that said, I paid MSRP of $15,100 plus $595 in destination fees, 3% NC sales tax (its yearly or something like that down here), $398 in dealer doc fees "to make sure my paperwork is handled in the highest quality. Bullshit. $16,900 US$ out the door if I recall correctly.
I put $2,000 on my credit card so they can eat 3% of that.

3) About a Civic, but discusses the Fit.
Just bought a 2007 Honda Civic LX (4dr automatic) at Bay Ridge Honda in Brooklyn and came out with an OTD of 18,055. (well really $18,555 since I put down $500).
I negotiated with info from this forum and got the dealer down to 16,400 + dest.
so breaks down as $16,400 + $595 (dest) + $1423 (tax 8.375%) + $137.50 (transfer, inspect, etc) - $500.00 (deposit) = $18055.
Overall, I think this is a decent deal as I really wanted them to add a roof rack which they just couldnt do, only if I brought in a roof rack and then they installed. I started out negotiating from $16,900 (their first offer). I then went to $16,700, then $16,600 and finally $16,400. In all honesty I think you could probably get them down lower, but at some point it becomes too much haggling for me and I was happy with the price.
FWIW, I went in to buy a FIT but left with a Civic for the following reasons
a) It just bothered me to pay full price for the FIT as they simply won't neogitiate on it...so you end up paying more for less. I left with the Civic at a lower price than the FIT (which they would not go below $16,900 for the FIT Sport AT).
b) The dealer only had 2 FITS and they seemed desperate to get rid of them, the one they really wanted me to buy was sitting on the floor and had a scratch in the door. Once they wouldnt negotiate for it being a floor model and having a scratch, the deal was over for the FIT. The other Fit they had in stock was manual transmission, which I didn't want.
c) The FIT has a cheap feel to it in my opinion. I mean it has this faux sporty styling that I always think of as cheap, (this is prob just my own bias though).
d) It seems like in real world driving the Civic gets better mpg than the fit.
e) I was really bothered by the gas tank being so small (10.3 gallons versus 13.5 on the Civici) on the FIT and it being located in the front/center near the passengers. I just don't see that as being safe for some reason, but I am not an engineer and not really sure...just made me feel uncomfortable.

4) A Fresno Fit.
Finally got the Honda Fit Sport Automatic in the color that we want.
Honda North (Fresno, CA) gave it to us for $100 off MSRP ($16465 + tax/doc). The dealer told me the car was on the lot for literally 1 day.
One thing that kinda bugged me is that the car didn't have floor mats. We ordered it online for $83.70 including tax/shipping.
Great car, we are extremely happy!

I just bought a Fit and paid MSRP and some people think that it's crazy to pay MSPR for a car, even though I pointed out to them that the difference between invoice and MSRP is only about $600. I had a high mileaage '99 Mercury Cougar that they offered me $1800, which I sold myself for $4000, so the $2200 difference more than makes up for paying MSPR. With the Fit in such high demand there really is no way around paying MSRP or negotiations, but if I were buying a Civic I'm sure that with every dollar reduced in the selling price of the Civic, there would be an equal reduction in what I'd get on the trade-in.
