Detox Your Wardrobe

Just like detoxing your body after the festive period or having a good old spring clean, tackling your wardrobe in 2009 is just the ideal way to clear your home...and head! However I believe a wardrobe detox is a lot more satisfying and also easier than resisting everything with a calorie in it for the next 30 days!

The idea is to achieve a wardrobe that contains only the items you can create an outfit from today. The process of a wardrobe detox is actually really therapeutic and can help you feel the buzz of having new clothes without actually spending a penny.

Firstly you need to rummage through your wardrobe and make a pile of clothes for each of the following categories (if they apply to you), and take the following action: -

1. Doesn’t fit – Store away out of sight or donate to charity
2. Don’t like anymore – donate to charity or have a clothes swap party with friends!
3. Not sure if it suits me or if I like it – get a second opinion from an honest 3rd party
4. Worn out and needs replacing – Bin or use as dusters!
5. Needs adjusting or fixing – take to a tailor or renew yourself
6. Not in Season i.e. spring/summer – Store away until the weather gets warmer

Out of Sight, Out of Mind
I always show my clients that if they can hang up the majority of their clothes, then they will be more likely to use them, so my advice is to use drawers for underwear, nightwear, lounging around and sports clothing, and garments that are out of season. That way you will have plenty of space to hang everything that you can wear today and will have more choice in your daily wardrobe.

A Whole New Wardrobe!
You should now be left with a wardrobe full of clothes that you can make lots of outfits with TODAY! It’s already like you have a whole new wardrobe without spending a penny! Bonus!  However don’t stop there. Give your wardrobe the respect it deserves and add (psychological) value to your clothing by organising it beautifully.

Visual Merchandising

Like in a store, it’s all about Visual Merchandising and giving you the feeling each day that your clothes and your image are really worth something. Make yourself want to buy into your wardrobe like it was your favourite shop by organising your clothes and accessories beautifully.

Here are my top organisation tips!

Use non-slip hangers to stop clothes falling off hangers and enable you to finally cut out all of those messy hanger ribbons. Never use wire hangers as they damage your clothing!

Use boxes and drawer separators to organise underwear, hosiery, belts, bangles, silk scarves etc.

Get over the door hangers or pegs and attach them to your wardrobe doors and hang belts, necklaces and scarves from them. That way they won’t get tangled and you can see what you have to accessorise your outfits.

Stuff shoes and bags with tissue or newspaper to help them to retain their original shape and spray them with protector to stop them from looking shabby after a few wears.

Use clear shoulder-covers over jackets and protect them from getting dusty and looking worn.

Never fold trousers over your hangers as it results in a permanent crease mid-leg not to mention uses up lots of space in your wardrobe! Preferably hang them full length if you can, or alternatively fold them in tissue.

Hopefully now you should feel like you have a whole new wardrobe and it has cost you next to nothing! You will find that by just following these steps it will automatically renew your desire to look good and practically will help you to achieve a more groomed image.

Not only that, but you will find once you are more organised and begin to treat your clothes with more respect you will become more creative and confident with your outfit choices and you will also be less inclined to go shopping for new garments every week.
